Getting a job in the fashion industry
Part 1: Getting your foot in the door

Get qualified

A qualification is going to help both short and long term because it proves that you're serious about getting into the fashion industry. The type of qualification can vary - if you've decided to go into something like design, then the degree that you focus on would major in that. If you're not sure what are you want to go into, go for one of the broader fashion degrees, which give you a good grounding and introduction into different areas.

Intern like crazy

An entry-level role can be very competitive and on paper, everyone looks essentially the same, so interning and work experience can can give you the advantage. It helps to prove that you're serious about a job in the field and it may help you decide what route to go down - it can help narrow your focus. During your internships you should also build some good contacts in the industry.

Use your networks

Because you're starting out, it's a lot about who you know, so I would definitely recommend using any networks or contacts that you have. Often if a junior role comes up within a company, they will often approach recent interns who have done a good job, because you have already proven yourself to a degree. And even if that particular company doesn't have something coming up, they might have other contacts they could refer you to.

Consider temping

Typically, temps are brought in when a company is really busy and they just need an extra pair of hands to do all the odd  jobs, whether it's admin, running around, sending out samples - all those things that take quite a lot of time but that don't necessarily need someone who's highly skilled. This is another good way to get your foot in the door.
