Getting a job in the fashion industry
Part 2: What to do in an interview
DO: Be prepared
Some interviews are very formal, some are a lot more relaxed - it depends on the person doing the interview. But it's much better to be prepared so that if it is quite a structured and detailed interview, you've at least done the work.
DO: Research the company
If it's a retail or wholesale business, make sure you get out to their stores or to stores where the product is being sold, so you can actually see the product and how it looks, how it's merchandised. Think about who the company's main competitors are and research them.
DO: Research the position
Make sure you're familiar with the job description and the skills that they're looking for and think about how your skills and experiences fit into what their expectations are. Put yourself in their shoes.
DO: Rehearse your answers
Rehearse the answers to some typical questions. These might include: why do you want to work for that particular company, over and above somebody else; what are your long-term goals; what are your strengths and weaknesses; how do you handle conflict. When you're thinking of answers, try to back them up with facts, either figures or a specific example where you've demonstrated that skill or behaviour. Often in interviews, that's where your mind can go blank and it can be difficult to think of an example so if you have thought that through, that will help.
