Getting a job in the fashion industry
Part 3: What not to do in an interview
DON'T: Go off on a tangent
In an interview you need to be very focused in your answers but often because of nerves, people can go off on tangents or ramble and not actually answer the question. If someone has been talking for 10 minutes but hasn't answered the question, it doesn't show focus within the person.
DON'T: Answer your phone
Always make sure you turn off your mobile phone but if you've forgotten and it goes off in the interview, please don't answer it! Apologise to the person conducting the interview, but carry on and try to ignore it.
DON'T: Gossip, bad mouth or lie
People will always ask you why you've left previous employers but it's not good practice to bad mouth other companies. At the same time, you need to try to give an honest answer so the decision to leave a position is not badly reflected on you. Be diplomatic and sensitive when giving your answer and practise it beforehand, so you're prepared and know what you want to say. Don't try to lie and cover up too much, be as honest as you can.
DON'T: Smoke
If you're a smoker and have had a cigarette just before walking into an interview, it's very obvious; people can smell it on your breath, and it can be very off-putting. I always advise candidates to hold off on having a cigarette until after the interview. If you do have to have one, take mints or breath freshener with you and wash your hands before going in.
